How to Style Black and White Interiors

When done correctly, there is nothing more classy or timeless than a black-and-white interior. This contrasting opposites-attract combination has been my favorite for a long time. It’s also been favored by many designers and architects who find inspiration in the glamour and purity of a color palette reduced to its foundation ingredients.
I recommend mixing styles; instead of having one specific style in your home. You can mix and match stones, ceramics, and metals. Also, mixing mid-century modern and more traditional pieces as well.
The texture is very important when it comes to decorating with neutrals, they help elevate the space and bring depth and interest. Layering natural materials with beautiful textures is a great way to achieve a textured, earthy look.
While it might seem easy to design in black and white, it requires some consideration. A black-and-white interior can seem boring and cold when it’s not done correctly. But designers who have mastered this combination follow some basic principles that make their black-and-white interiors awe-inspiring.
Interior designer Kara Mann, known for her sophisticated, modern interiors, has a 70/30 rule when it comes to black-and-white decor. “Pick a dominant color and use the other as your accent color,” she says. “Aim for a 70/30 ratio, for example, a large black sofa set against a white backdrop of white floors, walls, and coffee table. Then accessorize with metallics.”
focus on texture
Focus on texture, and I mean it!
When following a black-and-white palette, using varying textures is essential for creating a layered and dimensional space. You can add textures to your furniture, finishes, textiles, and accessories. Also, bring in textures of black with matte black metal fixtures, shiny black subway tile, shou sugi ban paneling, high gloss black paint, plush black velvet, or black linen sheets. Add textures of white with complementary shades of paint on walls and trim, and textiles and upholstery such as linen, (real or faux) sheepskin, leather, wool, cotton, or silk.
All in all, one of the easiest ways to liven up a black-and-white interior is to play around with patterns. A classic black-and-white Spanish tile floor. If you’re a minimalist who otherwise prefers solid colors, using black decor accents in a white room can create a bold graphic effect. A curvy white couch on a black floor will create a sculptural effect. Another idea is to add black-and-white photography or graphic art, these will look right at home in a monochrome room.
Another way to guarantee that your black-and-white scheme doesn’t seem too cold is to incorporate greenery. Add more plants than you think necessary, and don’t forget branches or even a stem or small branch in a vase.
